چکیده

[1] This paper considers the impact of the parameterization of subgridscale mixing on ocean heat transport in coarseresolution ocean models of the type used in coupled climate models. Increasing the vertical diffusion increases poleward heat transport in both hemispheres. Increasing lateral diffusion associated with transient eddies increases poleward heat transport in the southern hemisphere while decreasing it in the northern hemisphere. The results are interpreted in the context of a simple analytical model.

Oceanic ventilation and biogeochemical cycling: Understanding the physical mechanisms that produce realistic distributions of tracers and productivity

[1] Differing models of the ocean circulation support different rates of ventilation, which in turn produce different distributions of radiocarbon, oxygen, and export production. We examine these fields within a suite of general circulation models run to examine the sensitivity of the circulation to the parameterization of subgridscale mixing and surface forcing. We find that different models c...

On Antarctic Intermediate Water Mass Formation in Ocean General Circulation Models

Antarctic Intermediate Water is formed at the high mid-latitudes of the Southern Ocean. In many ocean general circulation model simulations with coarse resolution and a z-coordinate, a mid-depth salinity minimum characteristic of this intermediate water is reproduced. However, for the real ocean it remains unclear which are the dominant processes in the formation of this water mass and which ar...

The Ability of Large-Scale Ocean Models to Accept Parameterizations of Boundary Mixing, and a Description of a Refined Bulk Mixed-Layer Model

There are a number of barriers to the adoption of improved parameterizations of diapycnal mixing in large-scale ocean models. Two such barriers are discussed in detail. Ocean models often exhibit levels of spurious numerical diapycnal mixing that are so large, compared with the physical values, that parameterizing additional mixing is counterproductive, even when that additional mixing is physi...

The Role of Eddies in Determining the Structure and Response of the Wind-Driven Southern Hemisphere Overturning: Results from the Modeling Eddies in the Southern Ocean (MESO) Project

The Modeling Eddies in the Southern Ocean (MESO) project uses numerical sensitivity studies to examine the role played by Southern Ocean winds and eddies in determining the density structure of the global ocean and the magnitude and structure of the global overturning circulation. A hemispheric isopycnal-coordinate ocean model (which avoids numerical diapycnal diffusion) with realistic geometry...

Fueling export production: nutrient return pathways from the deep ocean and their dependence on the Meridional Overturning Circulation

In the Southern Ocean, mixing and upwelling in the presence of heat and freshwater surface fluxes transform subpycnocline water to lighter densities as part of the upward branch of the Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC). One hypothesized impact of this transformation is the restoration of nutrients to the global pycnocline, without which biological productivity at low latitudes would be s...
